The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
