Our Top Release of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Place.

At first glance, Lux could seem more like a challenging scholarly examination than the latest pop project from a musician whose last single featured a global pop icon. Divided into 4 separate sections and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced work investigating feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently by way of the perspective of different women saints. The end of a love affair—a topic handled with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward on this record, buoyed by the constant presence of a major orchestra and input from an award-winning composer within a long roll call of contributors. The pure audacity by itself renders the work of contemporary artists appear rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid overly academic chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, and full praise belonging to the artist. Although it's not her first project to alchemize the past with modern styles, the stakes feel much greater on Lux, and the balancing act more precarious. What truly raises this fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential sense of fun. Much like the legendary artist during her peak, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless want to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

This playful spirit shines clearly on a stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for several moments. Then, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge thuds in with comedic impact. The song immediately shifts into the wild track featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album is that the listener never quite know—or even wish to know—where you will go to next."

Nearly every song finishes in a totally different point from where it started. One moment explores the fleeting nature of celebrity with a delicate symphony before collapsing in digital chaos. Another, a song echoing her previous rhythmic work starts off moody and brooding, with prowling vocals, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key achievement on Lux involves straddling the line between bold innovation and broad accessibility. This is no coincidence that it has achieved the artist's first work to crack the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. One track sung entirely in the English language builds around a refrain that seems to collect more and more nagging melodies while it spins skyward. This feat gets echoed on a different powerful ballad that expands and contracts, weaving multiple melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a sharp smile, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album is pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism for glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully manages its built-in excess. This is a deep source of buried treasure that takes time to fully mine but doesn't feels like a chore. Where some major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the guests around it, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
