The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their streams. This step comes as the company revealed that it now features in excess of 1 billion AI videos.
Pilot Phase and Launch
This change is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a full-scale rollout. This advancement aligns with a surge in AI content, fueled by emerging content generation software.
The Broader AI Trend
It has been noted that almost one in 10 of the fastest-growing video streams on a competing service only show content made by AI. A significant portion of this content is considered mass-produced AI material, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or surreal.
“We know from our community that many people appreciate content produced via AI tools, including AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to give people the ability to see more or less of that, according to their own choices,” stated a platform representative.
Scale of AI Content
TikTok shared that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its network identified as artificially created. Overall, over 100 m pieces of content are added to the service each day, making AI-generated material a relatively small portion of its overall inventory.
Customizing Your Feed
Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the amount of AI-generated videos they view by using the “manage topic” setting in the platform and picking AI-made media. Further subjects that currently be adjusted under the filter include news, clothing, cosmetics, and choreography.
AI Disclosure Rules
TikTok’s guidelines oblige content makers to label lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids harmful AI impersonations of celebrities or critical incidents. Any believable artificial content that is unmarked can be deleted under its community policies.
Additionally, the platform will henceforth apply an “AI-made” watermark to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an cross-platform project for spotting AI-generated material. This step is designed to stop users from seeking to evade the disclosure requirement.
Educational Initiatives
TikTok is also introducing a $2 million awareness program for specialists and institutions to develop learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will support charitable organizations focused on training computer science.
Platform Protection
The platform has justified its safety measures, during discussion over plans to cut jobs for a large number of review team members in the UK. TikTok is expected to eliminate hundreds of positions in its trust and safety department in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists expressing worry that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.
A company official explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but automated tools can shield workers by removing the most graphic content before it has to be seen by staff. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content seen by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to reliance on its machine learning processes.
We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is making a difference operate efficiently.”
